Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CYD drink spike tests, from how they work to what to do if you think you’ve been spiked.
What is CYD?

CYD (Check Your Drink) is a pocket-sized drink spike test. You put a drop of your drink on two test patches and check for a colour change, usually within 15 seconds and always within 30.

What does it test for?

The pale pink patch screens for GHB, including pharmaceutical GHB (Xyrem) and related compounds. The yellow patch screens for ketamine, scopolamine, cocaine and other amine-based drugs.

Does it detect alcohol?

No. Extra alcohol is one of the most common ways drinks are spiked, and CYD does not test for it. If you feel far drunker than you should, get help whatever the test shows.

How accurate is it?

CYD has been tested on 92 different drinks. The ketamine test had no false positives (100% specificity) and a 2.3% false negative rate (97.67% sensitivity). The GHB test had a 4.88% combined false positive and false negative rate.

Who developed it?

CYD was developed over four years with the University of Strathclyde and Clinical Trials Laboratory Services (CTLS), and independently tested by Lucideon.

How do I use it?

Using your finger or a straw, put one drop of the drink on each test patch. Wait up to 30 seconds and check the colours.

Does it work on all drinks?

It works on most alcoholic and soft drinks, but some can affect results. Milk-based drinks can affect the GHB test. Bitter lemon or lime cordial may cause a false negative on the GHB test. Dark red drinks, such as red wine or blackcurrant cordial, can interfere with both tests.

Can I reuse a test?

No. Each strip is single use. Wristbands have two sets of tests.

Does a test expire?

CYD tests have a shelf life of five years.

How should I store my tests?

Keep tests in their original sealed foil pouches or containers, in a cool, dry, dark place. Moisture, heat or direct sunlight can damage the chemical reagents on the pads and cause false or invalid readings.

What does a positive result look like?

The pink patch turns blue or pale grey (GHB), or the yellow patch turns orange (ketamine and other amine-based drugs).

What should I do if it's positive?

Don't drink it. Keep the drink if you can, as it may be evidence. Tell a friend and a member of staff, and report it to the police.

If nothing changes colour, is my drink safe?

Not necessarily. CYD is an indicator screening test, not a laboratory test. It won't detect substances outside its range or amounts below detectable levels. If in doubt, don't drink it.

What should I do if I think I've been spiked?

Stop drinking and keep the drink if you can. Tell someone you trust, such as a friend, bar staff or security, and don't leave with anyone you don't know. If you or someone else is very unwell, call 999 or go to A&E, and take your CYD result with you. Report it to the police as soon as you can: GHB leaves the body within about 6 to 12 hours, so samples need to be taken quickly.

Is spiking a crime?

Yes. Adding alcohol or drugs to someone's drink without their knowledge is illegal, including "as a joke". The victim is never to blame.

Where can I get support?

Victim Support offers a free 24/7 Supportline on 08 08 16 89 111 (England and Wales), whether or not you've reported it. Rape Crisis England & Wales runs a free 24/7 Support Line on 0808 500 2222 for anyone aged 16+ affected by sexual violence. If you're abroad, contact local emergency services or the British Embassy.

Which product should I choose?

The CYD Pouch (5 strips) fits behind a phone case for everyday carry. The CYD Matchbook and Black Matchbook (8 strips) fit in a pocket, wallet or phone case. The CYD Wristband (2 sets of tests) is ideal for festivals, concerts and weekend events.

How long does delivery take?

UK orders are dispatched within 24 hours and arrive within 48 hours. International delivery times depend on where you are.

Can I return an order?

Yes, if the products are unopened and unused.
